Welland, Ontario Overview

Welland is a southern Ontario city in the Regional Municipality of Niagara. Its central location, and rich transit history have resulted in a good-sized city of over 50,000 people that is steadily growing every year. Not only is Welland a short drive from the waters of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and the Niagara River, it also has the local waterways of the Welland Canal and the Welland River. The town bears the nickname “Rose City”, shared with its annual community gathering, the Rose Festival in the summertime.

Welland really is in the middle of everything. It is a 25 minute drive southwest of Niagara Falls, 20 minutes south of St. Catharines, and 30 minutes northwest of Fort Erie. This allows it to have access to easy border crossing to the United States across the Niagara River and convenient public transit options to access the Greater Toronto Area. Not to mention, its location is perfect for enjoying the year-round mild climate of the Niagara Region.

The Niagara Region as a whole saw a general increase in the average sale price of residential properties. Each individual area also saw an increase, with Welland at an average of $342,000 in 2019 up from about $312,000 the year prior. Even with the increase, Welland remains one of the region’s most affordable areas, its average falling well below the regional average of about $430,000 in 2019. Older homes tend to be listed below Welland’s average while detached, new properties usually start in the $500,000s. A lot of the city’s more recent development has been apartment-style condo projects.

Welland is less than a half an hour drive from many of the famous amenities and landmarks in the Niagara Region. This is great for planning a weekend trip or for considering a daily commute. Welland Transit operates 8 bus routes throughout the city, they run on a daily schedule with reduced service on the weekend. Thanks to the GO Bus and GO Train service in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines, it is also possible to reach Toronto and the GTA by public transit.

Education in the Niagara Region is handled by the District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic District School Board. In the public board, there are 8 elementary schools and two secondary schools, Welland Centennial and Eastdale. The Catholic Board offers 6 elementary schools and one secondary option, Notre Dame College School. Additional programs are offered by other boards that service the Niagara Region, but students might have to travel outside of Welland to access them. There is one post-secondary institution in the city, the Welland campus of the Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology.

With the Rose Festival being its most famous, Welland is known for a line-up of diverse community festivals like the Folklore Festival, the Welland Fair, and the Dragon Boat Festival. Other great attractions include public art displays, the Welland Public Library, and the Welland Historical Museum. Residents can also enjoy the great outdoors by experiencing Welland’s canal trails, parks, and community gardens.
