Located along the north shore of Lake Erie is the picturesque community of Port Stanley. Named after Edward Smith-Stanley, Port Stanley played an important role in the travel of European explorers during the 17th and 18th century. In 1804 Port Stanley was settled in by Lieutenant Colonel John Bostwick. The harbour had played a major role in exporting coal from Canada to the United States and aided in the development of the community. In 1923, a commemoration spot was created in the middle of Port Stanley as a National Historic Site of Canada.

Present day Port Stanley is a popular summer destination as it enjoys one of the best rated beaches in Ontario. Downtown Port Stanley is lined with restaurants, boutiques, cafes and includes a community theater.

In recent years, Port Stanley has seen a large amount of development with new subdivisions and neighborhoods being built especially in the northern sections of the community. Closer to the shoreline, and especially along the water, the real estate landscape mainly consists of the summer homes, personal cottages and vacation properties, however, there are a number of residents that live in these homes year round. 

Due to the increased popularity of Port Stanley’s main beach, real estate for these areas have seen a large jump in property values. Cottages can be found ranging in price from $400,000 to over $1 million dollars depending on key factors such as proximity to the shoreline, size and amenities. 

As far as Port Stanley’s mainly residential neighborhood set away from the waterfront, homes can land between $250,000 to $1.5 million. There has been a number of condo buildings that have been developed in Port Stanley that can be found within the town as well as beachfront.

Historically, Port Stanley’s economy heavily relied on the large sheltered harbours that were once operated by Transport Canada and supported the transportation of coal and wood from Canada to the United States. Transport Canada transferred ownership to the Municipality of Central Elgin when the industry died down, and many of the facilities have remained dormant since. There is, however, an industrial fresh water fishing company that presently uses the harbour. 

Port Stanley has evolved from a working harbour town to a present day tourist destination welcoming thousands of visitors during the summer months that enjoy its beautiful beaches, delicious dining options and cultural and arts centers. 

Much of Port Stanley's economy heavily relies on visitors and major industries include restaurant and hospitality. 

Port Stanley is home to 1 public school, Kettle Creek Elementary School. Recently, the schools request for funding to add additional space and upgrades was approved by the government and the $5.5 million dollar project is underway and set to be completed in August of 2020. For high school aged students, the nearest location is down Sunset Road at Parkside Collegiate Institute. 

Port Stanley offers its residents a chance at lakeshore living, with beautiful views of Lake Erie in all seasons. Amenities, greenspace, parks and community events are just a few of the reasons why many are choosing to call Port Stanley home.
