Port Dover, Ontario Overview
Port Dover is a community in Norfolk County. The community is located on the northern shore of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario. With a population of over 6,000 people, Port Dover is the second largest community in Norfolk County, second to the municipal centre in Simcoe. The area is known for fishing, beaches, and fun seasonal celebrations.

The average price of a property in the area went from $385,000 in the beginning of 2019, to $445,000 in the beginning of 2020. Likewise, Port Dover experienced a similar increase from $560,000 to just over $590,000. Cottages and lakefront properties keep Port Dover’s market more active, but give the community a higher average than the rest of the county. Port Dover benefits from convenient access to Ontario Highway 6 which travels northeast up through Hagersville, Caledonia, and up to the city of Hamilton. Port Dover is an hour drive from the core of Hamilton and a 40 minute drive from Brantford. The Ride Norfolk Transit bus system connects Port Dover with other communities in the county on Thursdays and Fridays, providing public transportation access to the services in Simcoe and the potential to connect with Brantford as well.
Most schools in Norfolk County are operated by the Grand Erie District School Board and the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board. Students in the public board can attend Lakewood Public School, which is located in Port Dover and also offers French Immersion programming. For secondary school, students must attend Simcoe Composite School. Students in the Catholic Board start by attending St. Cecilia’s in Port Dover for elementary school, then Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Simcoe for secondary grades. Simcoe also offers students access to the Conseil scolaire Catholique Mon Avenir and French Immersion program.
The biggest attraction in Port Dover is the community’s natural setting. The Port Dover Beach is great for families, offering pleasant sandy beaches, a boardwalk stroll out to Port Dover Lighthouse, and the convenience of Port Dover’s downtown shopping and dining experience. Boating enthusiasts can use the port’s water access to cruise around Lake Erie or can learn about the region’s heritage at the Port Dover Harbour Museum. Festivals in the area also draw big crowds from the Christmas Fest Parade in the winter to the Friday the 13th motorcycle rallies that take place throughout the year.
