Hamilton Ontario Overview

First settled by British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolutionary War, the port city of Hamilton is located on the Western side of Lake Ontario. It is considered one of the major residential and industrial centres in the Golden Horseshoe region that wraps around Lake Ontario. Hamilton is also a popular bedroom community of Toronto, the city itself setting the boundaries for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

In 2001, the boundaries of Hamilton grew even further as the city absorbed the neighbouring municipalities of Ancaster, Dundas, Flamborough, Glanbrook, and Stoney Creek, gathering together more than 100 neighbourhoods in the “new” City of Hamilton. Now, the population of Hamilton is sitting at 536,917 people.

Houses for sale in Hamilton is influenced by the city’s easy access to Toronto and the Ontario Highway system. In 2018, the average sale price of a property in the city was just over $500,000 after being on the market for an average of a month. On the top end, Hamilton and its surrounding area are home to multi-million dollar estates in the heart of the city and ranches in a more rural setting. Owning a unit in a large apartment building or an older home in the city is more affordable, with many older properties being listed for under $300,000. In addition, Hamilton has a wide selection of houses and units available for rent.

During the height of industrial steel production, Hamilton was considered the “Steel Capital of Canada”. The manufacturing sector is still one of Hamilton’s largest employers, but Health and Education have been gaining in recent years.

For a ride around Hamilton, the Hamilton Street Railway provides 35 different routes including two express lines and a waterfront trolley during the Summer months. As a bonus to the standard routes, the buses also provide extra service to several schools and industrial areas. GO Transit offers convenient access to the City of Toronto an hour away. 

Public schools in Hamilton are handled by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic School Board. Additional elementary and secondary coverage is provided by the Conseil scolaire Viamonde, Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud, and a variety of private institutions. For post-secondary education, Hamilton is home to McMaster University as well as McMaster Divinity College, Mohawk College, and Redeemer University College.

Between the cultural centre of the city and the beautiful natural scenery of the nearby areas, Hamilton has a variety of attractions to explore. Hamilton is home to an array of military history museums: the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Dundurn Castle, and the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Heritage Museum. Art lovers can enjoy the Art Gallery of Hamilton or the McMaster Museum of Art. Those looking for an adventure can visit African Lion Safari, a drive-through wildlife park 30 minutes away between Hamilton and Cambridge.
