Crerar and Barnstown, Hamilton, Ontario Overview
Crerar and Barnstown are two central Hamilton Mountain neighbourhoods. Both neighbourhoods are bound by Upper Wentworth Street to the east, Upper Wellington street to the west, and divided from one another by Stone Church Road east. The northernmost neighbourhood, Crerar is south of the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway and Barnstown is north of Rymal Road east. Both neighbourhoods are residential with an excellent blend of community buildings, schools, parks, and houses.
Real Estate in Crerar and Barnstown
The Hamilton Mountain region is one of the more expensive areas of the original City of Hamilton. At the end of 2019, the average sales price in the Mountain was about $500,000 - a figure second only to the slightly higher average in Hamilton West. Both neighbourhoods are largely residential and feature properties mostly built between the 1980s and the early 2000s. Crerar and Barnstown have a more specific regional average of $545,000 for that same year - higher than the Mountain area average because it has more detached houses that are usually more expensive. There are older semi-detached options in both neighbourhoods, but they are little rarer in the area. The size of the homes and lots are appealing to families looking for 3 or more bedrooms and ample yard space, though those are some of the most costly properties. Many homes in the area already have a pool or have enough space to get one.
Living in Crerar and Barnstown
The Hamilton Mountain area is separated from the core of the city by the ridge of the Niagara Escarpment. Residents enjoy some distance from the busier downtown, but still benefit from the convenience of the Lincoln M. Alexander Parkway which connects to both the 403 Highway and the Queen Elizabeth Way (via Red Hill Valley Parkway). Both neighbourhoods are also very family-friendly with easy access to parks, great school options, and a branch of the public library all very close. The nearest commercial area, Upper James Square, is about 5 minutes to the west along Stone Church Road. Both sides of Upper James Street are packed with shopping, family dining, and more takeout choices than you can try in a week.
