Balfour, Hamilton, Ontario Overview
The neighbourhood of Balfour is located in south-central Hamilton. Balfour is north of Mohawk Road East, east of Upper James Street, south of Fennel Avenue, and west of Upper Wellington street. The area neighbours Centremount, Hill Park, Greeningdon, and Bonnington. Together, they are all considered further subdivisions of the Hamilton Mountain area. Balfour was named after James Balfour, a celebrated 19th century Canadian architect who designed the historic Balfour House on James Street South.

Balfour is a charming and mature area of the City of Hamilton. As part of the Hamilton Mountain area, Balfour is located along the city’s section of the Niagara Escarpment. The majority of homes in Balfour are from a time when lot sizes were less cramped and compact. Many houses in Balfour are detached and sport a good chunk of yard and nice long driveways. The area is mostly detached homes with a high percentage of bungalows. The Hamilton Mountain area is a little more expensive than the city core with prices comparable to Hamilton’s west end on average. At the end of 2019, the average price for the area was around $500,000. In Balfour specifically, that price point would get you something on the smaller end.

The pretty, tree-lined streets of Balfour are fairly quiet with most of the traffic and hustle centered around the amenities along Upper James Street. Balfour is a pleasant area to live if you are looking for a property that is less than two stories in a more mature-feeling neighbourhood. Balfour has its own shopping plaza as well as additional shops and restaurants along Upper James Street, so you don’t have to venture all that far for errands. The neighbourhood has its own school, Norwood Elementary school and park, so families in the area can live within walking distance to their children’s school. Mohawk College is not too far from Balfour either, making it a reasonable commute as well.
