Grand Bend, Ontario Overview
Grand Bend got its start in the 1830s from English and Scottish settlers. The settlement's original name was Brewster’s Mills, after one of the main businesses that began there. At the time, most of the community was the millhands’ families and some fishermen.
The community remained an out-of-the-way lumber processing settlement until the highway came through Goderich in 1850. This allowed the village to be no longer wholly dependent on the forests and opened opportunities for new businesses. It was after this time that the name Grand Bend eventually stuck for the large hairpin turn on the Ausable River it is settled on.
Some people have dubbed the feeling of Grand Bend as being the “Florida of the North” with its sunny, beachy properties, great shopping experiences, and more.
