Exeter, Ontario Overview

Exeter, Ontario, is a community within the municipality of South Huron. It is located about 40 km north of London.

Founded between London and Stratford, the historic town of Exeter is Ontario’s southern gateway to the west coast. The community loves its nickname of “Home of the White Squirrel,” due to the presence of some of the critters.

Exeter was founded in 1832 and, by 1853, had grown into a community of 300. The settlements north and south of the Ausable River merged to form the Village of Exeter.

After a connection to the railway service in the 1870s, the community began growing. Today, Exeter is a town of over 4,700 people.

Exeter has a fantastic historic downtown where you can get to know the unique architecture through a self-guided heritage tour.

When there, you can check out the retro candy store, Uptown Sweets or grab some chocolates from Sugar & Spice Chocolates. For restaurants, you can try Eddington’s of Exeter for great experimental fine dining. There’s also excellent world cuisine with Exeter Thai Cuisine or Golden City.

Then, you can take your purchases to the McNaughton Park Scenic Gardens for a stroll. A trail system comes out from it for a walk that’s navigable by most people. In addition, kids can enjoy the Storytime Trail, which takes them through the pages of a storybook.

Other options include Elliott Park, with its great camping options. Or, you can visit one of three golf courses in the Exeter area.

The Exeter area is also home to many excellent health and wellness facilities. These include the South Huron Medical Centre, the Grand Bend and Area Community Health Centre, and the Exeter Villa and One Care Home & Community Support Services, which offers help to seniors.
