Dundas Ontario Overview

living in dundas ontario

The Hamilton community of Dundas shares its name with Dundas Street - a major road that crosses Southern Ontario. The former town got its name from the road in the 1840s. Before that, the town was known as Cootes Paradise. In 2001, Dundas and many other smaller towns outside of Hamilton were amalgamated to form the new City of Hamilton boundaries. Dundas, Ontario is home to about 25,000 people who get to enjoy the community’s classic downtown, nature conservation efforts, and proximity to McMaster and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Located 15 minutes west of the Hamilton core, not only is Dundas a bedroom community for the GTHA, but it is also a popular area for the students and staff of McMaster University to live close to the campus. The Dundas area has a good mix of old detached and new condo properties with some historic homes, buildings, and landmarks that are used in television and movie filming.

Overall, the Hamilton area had an average sale price of $535,000 in 2019. For its valley location and proximity to natural sites and Hamilton conveniences, Dundas had a higher average price of about $645,000. While cheaper than the similar community of Ancaster, Dundas has not expanded outward, so it has a slower market and a smaller inventory of properties. Like other prominent Hamilton communities - and the city of Hamilton itself, Dundas has experienced an increase in housing pricing and inventory between 2018 and 2019 as the entire area gains popularity.

Living in Dundas Ontario

As a part of the City of Hamilton, Dundas is serviced by a few routes of municipal public transit, the Hamilton Street Railway System. The routes connect several parks, schools, and Dundas neighbourhoods with easy access to downtown Hamilton and McMaster University. For commuters, Dundas is nearly 40 minutes away from Mississauga and an hour and 10 minutes away from downtown Toronto. Both the GO Train and the GO Bus network are accessible from Hamilton and provide an alternative to driving on the highway.

Schools in Dundas are provided by both the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board. Elementary students can attend Dundana, Dundas Central, Sir William Osler, or Yorkview in the Public board and St. Augustine or St. Bernadette in the Catholic Board. The only high school in Dundas is Dundas Valley, so students in the Catholic Board attend a school elsewhere in Hamilton. The closest post-secondary option is McMaster University, just east of Dundas.

One reason Dundas has not expanded is because it is almost entirely surrounded by conservation areas, trails, woods, and beautiful waterfalls. The Dundas Valley Conservation Area, Spencer Gorge Wilderness Area, Borer’s Falls Conservation Area, and Cootes Paradise Sanctuary are just some of the nearby options for nature lovers. There are numerous trails, parks, and beaches across the City of Hamilton as well, not to mention the Royal Botanical Gardens! Aside from nature, Dundas has a unique community identity as well, celebrating both an International Buskerfest and Dundas Cactus Festival annually in the summer.
