The Best Elementary Schools in Windsor, Ontario
Windsor is the third largest city in Southwestern Ontario. It is home to 217,188 people and is serviced by four public school boards and several additional private schools. When you are considering a move, the quality of nearby schools plays a huge role in the ultimate decision. High scores are just the beginning, though, as location, services, programs, and extracurriculars can be just as important for students and parents.
The four main school boards in Windsor are: The Greater Essex County District School Board, Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and Conseil scolaire catholique Providence. The following list is assembled based on the schools’ scores on the Fraser Institute, a non-profit group that ranks schools according to their reported performance on provincial testing. With the most recent results, here are the top-ranking elementary schools in the Windsor area:.
First up at #10 is Notre Dame with a score of 7.0 out of a possible 10. Provincial testing scores in Reading, Writing, and Math have remained pretty consistent between 2014 and 2018. This Catholic Elementary school is the home of the Wildcats! Notre Dame is included in the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board and takes students in JK to Grade 8. The school itself is located in the neighbourhood of South Windsor with a boundary that stretches north passed the E.C. Row Expressway and into the neighbourhood of South Cameron. As a special treat for its grade 8 students, Notre Dame offers an overnight Muskoka trip in October as an opportunity to unplug and enhance leadership skills before transitioning to high school.
Next in the #9 spot is Giles Campus, a French Immersion school in the Greater Essex County District School Board. The school holds a ranking of 7.1 out of 10 with scores showing improvement from 2016 to 2018. The school services students from their Early Years (Junior and Senior Kindergarten) up until Grade 8 entirely in French. Giles Campus can be found in the Windsor neighbourhood of Walkerville. The initial school boundaries encompass much of Walkerville and Central Windsor with extended boundaries throughout the city for Grade 1 to 8 students that live outside of those neighbourhoods. Giles Campus Condors can enjoy a variety of extracurricular activities like clubs, recreational sports, and school teams.
At #8 is the Catholic Elementary School called St. Rose. St. Rose, home of the Falcons, has a rating of 7.4 out of 10 based on its scores in Reading, Writing, and Math. St. Rose is located in the waterfront neighbourhood of Riverside on the northeast side of Windsor. The school boundaries match up precisely with the neighbourhood boundaries for Riverside. The school services children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and is a part of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board.
Just after St. Rose is another member of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, St. Anne with an identical score of 7.4 out of 10. St. Anne offers the French Immersion program to students between Junior Kindergarten and Grade 8. This home of the Panthers offers special lunches, field trips, and a Grade 8 leadership Muskoka trip. St. Anne is located in Walkerville with a smaller boundary in the neighbourhood for Kindergarten to Grade 8, but a much larger boundary across Windsor to provide French Immersion to students in Grade 7 or 8.
Talbot Trail Public School is #6 on the list with a score of 7.5 out of 10. This elementary school in the Greater Essex County District School Board teaches Kindergarten (JK and SK) to Grade 8. Talbot Trail also has ESL Program support from JK through to Grade 8. The school offers a great experience for athletically-inclined students as well, being the home of some district champion sports teams! Talbot Trail is located in the South Windsor neighbourhood Roseland in the newer subdivision of Walker Gates. The school boundaries include all of Walker Gates as well as a little sliver immediately South of the Dougall Parkway.
#5 is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Catholic elementary school for Kindergarten to Grade 8. The schools secures its spot with a score of 7.6 out of 10 in the most recent rankings. This elementary school has an active blog with school news and weekly math challenges, making it easy for parents to stay connected. Like other schools in the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, OLMC offers a Muskoka Leadership trip in October for its Grade 8 students. OLMC, home of the Cougars, makes its home in the southern Windsor neighbourhood of Roseland with boundaries that cover the area.
#4 is the first school on the list from the Conseil scolaire catholique Providence, Catholic French Immersion board. The board services the counties of Essex, Chatham-Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, and Oxford. Monseigneur Jean Noël is one of the board’s four elementary offerings in Windsor taking children from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Monseigneur Jean Noël earns its #4 slot with a rating of 7.9 out of 10. Its top scores are in Reading and Math. This elementary school can be found in South Windsor, but the boundaries encompass the western areas of Malden and Ojibway as well.
An-Noor is a privately operated Islamic school in the #3 spot on the list. In 2018, they had a score of 8.1 out of 10 with high scores in Grade 6 Reading and Math. The school has a relatively small enrollment compared to the public schools on this list, but has maintained a consistently high ranking. Students attend An-Noor from Kindergarten to Grade 8. In some cases, they can attend even earlier if they are a part of the Daycare or Preschool programs offered by the school. Because it is a private school, An-Noor charges a registration, tuition, books, and uniform fee. An-Noor is located in South Central Windsor and services a wide area across the city.
Runner-up in the rankings is Southwood Public School, a part of the Greater Essex County District School Board. Southwood earns its place with a score of 8.2 out of 10 in 2018 and consistently high scores from years prior. Southwood takes students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Southwood Public School is between the areas of South Windsor and Roseland, just south of Cabana Road. It’s boundaries service most of the Rosewood area to the south of the school itself.
In the top spot is Bellewood Public School also in the Greater Essex County District School Board. The #1 school has a ranking of 8.7 out of 10 and consistently ranks in the high 8s or early 9s for its provincial test scores. In the last 4 years of available rankings, Bellewood’s averages in Reading, Writing, and Math have not fallen below a Level 3 (out of 4). Bellewood is a French Immersion Public School that services students in Kindergarten to Grade 8 in an entirely French environment. Bellewood is on the western side of the South Windsor Area. After a 2018 boundary change, Bellewood takes students from the western half of South Windsor and Roseland including Malden and Ojibway further west.
